CAN YOU FORGET YOUR TRUE LOVE? Akash is devastated when his wife Nisha dies of cancer, leaving him all alone to raise their fouryear- old daughter, Sara. He finds it impossible to deal with the void in his life, and coping with the demands of being a single parent makes the situation worse. The crisis affects his professional life as well, which, too, takes an unexpected turn. Subah is a painter who started hating men ever since she was dumped by her boyfriend for another woman. She runs an NGO that helps women whose lives have been ruined by abusive men. When Akash meets Subah their lives change forever, but Akash is ridden with guilt as he finds himself getting closer to Subah. Can he be in love with two women at the same time? The Last Love Letter explores the contours of broken relationships and the meaning of commitment in modern India. The book discovers that love is neither about control nor surrender but a blessing that can only be experienced by listening to the heart.

A Conversation With Kulpreet Yadav

From being a writer of crime novels, what made you transition to a story about love?

I guess it was organic. As a person I’ve always been moved by the power of love and the influence it has in whatever we do. Writing thrillers came to me instinctively because of two reasons: one, my background in the armed forces; and two, I’ve grown up reading thrillers. But to tell you the truth, my thrillers have always had a strong romantic hook, something that was central to all the plots I’ve written.

Writing a full-blown romance novel was a different experience. Before writing, I read many romance novels and realised how close their stories were to how I think and lead my personal life. These were stories about people, the love we give to each other, the sacrifices we make, the selflessness of the emotion, the fact that love brings about happiness that’s deeper and more meaningful than money, the bitter-sweet daily conversations and fun… the list is endless.

Can love happen twice?

Yes, it can. But the important thing to note is that it can’t be pre-programmed. You can’t say, I will fall in love again. Falling in love the second time is destiny and may or may not happen to all.

Has the idea of love changed drastically in recent times?

Yes, and in a good way. Love is no longer about taking and owning, it’s more about giving and sacrificing. That’s why we are seeing so many happier people in love. Now there’s greater equality between men and women, which is paving way for increased mutual respect and acceptance. There are still problems, I know, but I think the world is moving towards better times as far as love between a man and a woman is concerned.

Do women fall in love more easily than men?

I wouldn’t say so. I think the idea of being in love is not gender specific.

Are men from Mars and women from Venus?

Well, yes. Both think differently, act differently, and get aroused differently. However cliched I might sound, but it is true that women think about love with their minds while men think with their bodies. This, being different, can sometimes cause problems. But that’s the best part. Because those who want to experience the miracle called love and grow with it, continue to believe that they will not allow these differences to overpower what they feel for each other.

What is “The Last Love Letter” about?

The struggle of a man who is being pulled in two directions: the past love and the present love.

What’s your idea of a perfect day with your other half?

A day on the beach, helping her with shopping in the evening, a candle lit dinner at a quiet place, flowers & wine, music and dance, and finally a hand-in-hand stroll in the dark listening to the sound of the waves.

Do you think men should cook?

I can only talk about myself and I love to cook.

The best thing that you have ever said about the physical aspect of love?

“A good kiss is a profound conversation.”

If not a writer, what would you have been?

A painter or an actor perhaps.
